WASHINGTON (AFP) — The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.
“We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,” long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.
A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old.
They also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference.
Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free — provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said.
The treaties signed with the United States are merely “worthless words on worthless paper,” the Lakota freedom activists say on their website.
The treaties have been “repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life,” the reborn freedom movement says.
Withdrawing from the treaties was entirely legal, Means said.
“This is according to the laws of the United States, specifically article six of the constitution,” which states that treaties are the supreme law of the land, he said.
“It is also within the laws on treaties passed at the Vienna Convention and put into effect by the US and the rest of the international community in 1980. We are legally within our rights to be free and independent,” said Means.
The Lakota relaunched their journey to freedom in 1974, when they drafted a declaration of continuing independence — an overt play on the title of the United States’ Declaration of Independence from England.
Thirty-three years have elapsed since then because “it takes critical mass to combat colonialism and we wanted to make sure that all our ducks were in a row,” Means said.
One duck moved into place in September, when the United Nations adopted a non-binding declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples — despite opposition from the United States, which said it clashed with its own laws.
“We have 33 treaties with the United States that they have not lived by. They continue to take our land, our water, our children,” Phyllis Young, who helped organize the first international conference on indigenous rights in Geneva in 1977, told the news conference.
The US “annexation” of native American land has resulted in once proud tribes such as the Lakota becoming mere “facsimiles of white people,” said Means.
Oppression at the hands of the US government has taken its toll on the Lakota, whose men have one of the shortest life expectancies — less than 44 years — in the world.
Lakota teen suicides are 150 percent above the norm for the United States; infant mortality is five times higher than the US average; and unemployment is rife, according to the Lakota freedom movement’s website.
“Our people want to live, not just survive or crawl and be mascots,” said Young.
“We are not trying to embarrass the United States. We are here to continue the struggle for our children and grandchildren,” she said, predicting that the battle would not be won in her lifetime.

SPIRITS FOR SALE!???A DOCUMENTARY, BUT AT WHAT PRICE????
Sometimes, I ask myself? Why Why Why??? At the time, I was remembering a vision I had a time ago. One, where we can do justice for our people, give hope for our children. You know! A better tomorrow! One where we can remember yester year, yesterday, One where we can say, “We are making change slowly, but in small steps..” Cause, thats the way they work, the otherside to this side! Its not I, or Its not U, or them….Its Mitakuyase, our Relatives who come and give us Visions of the past, present and future. There the ones who give us Hope, Courage, and the Gifts to carry them out.
The simple fact is, that they are trying to tell us something. What? Well, these wayz are Sacred.
These wayz are powerful! They must be done without question the
right way. Cause they were made to be simple and yet done with love and compassion. But yet, we teach and promise and promise to the eager, determined, vulnerable, the ones who will pay money, FOR WHAT? So they can be Lakota, pray like Lakota’s…Be Lakota’s…If thats the way it rollz..Then what have we learned from them…Some of them KNOW BETTER…but do they care…NO….Is it power and control which drives people to charge and charge, and become self proclaimed medicine men over nite. LIKE BUYING A PIPE FROM PRAIRE EDGE IN RAPID CITY…LIKE SAYING BUY ME, THEN I WILL MAKE U LAKOTA….Is the good feeling they get when someone is ABUSED AND ABUSED IN SWEAT OR CEREMONY! Is the WHITE MAN, or WHO IS THE WHITE MAN THESE DAYZ… I dont know who’s better man the white man saying he’s A LAKOTA MEDICINE MAN…OR IS THE LAKOTA MAN ABUSING OUR CHILDREN IN CEREMONIES AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT…
My many adventures and travels around the country have led me to witness. Witnessing, the butchering and mutilation of THESE SACRED LAKOTA WAYZ. I get a sick feeling, a very sad feeling of a vision for tomorrow. LIKE WATCHING OUR RELATIVES WHO LYE THERE AT WOUNDED KNEE! KNOWING THEY WERE SACRIFICED TO PLEASE THERE PRIDE! HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE WILL BE SACRIFICED ON OUR RESERVATIONS! HOW MANY MORE MUST SUFFER GENERATIONS OF THE SAME CYCLE OVER AND OVER OF ABUSE AND GENOCIDE OR OUR WAYZ….
SO I MUST SAY THIS, AFTER ALL THIS! ITS TIME TO TAKE THESE WAYZ BACK! WHEN WILL WE STAND TOGETHER? AS A NATION OF VISIONARIES, HEALERS, AND PROTECTORS OF THIS WAY OF LIFE. WHEN WILL PEOPLE KNOW, OR THE EXCUSE IS THEY JUST DONT KNOW ANY BETTER. I’M ALL ABOUT HEALING AND BEING HAPPY CAUSE, WE LIVE A BEAUTIFUL LIFE…
So as being a co-producer to “Spirits for Sale!” The message is simple, dont sell these wayz…Cause, Tunkasila is watching alwayz…The Swedes, they just DONT know how it is…I jumped on board, casue, it was exciting to actually put a part of your vision in the movie. We sat down at the bottom of Bear Butte and talked. This was never about fame or making money…It was about a vision that came from the heart….The VISION flowed thru my minicojou blood, remembering my relatives on the other side…Its why I push the movie “Spirits for Sale!” Cause of that peice of the message is important…I could careless about a Sweden carrying a feather to my rez…What a story huh! To hand it to the our White Buffalo Calf Keeper! Now, that made them famous, Like saying look at us, the white people, infilitrated Cheyenne River and counted Coup on them…….I HATE TO SEE WHAT HAPPEN IF THEY GAVE HER A TURKEY FEATHER! WHERE SHE MIGHT TRAVEL…TO THE COUNTRY TURKEY! MAYBE! SO I SAY THIS TOO YOU ALL! CHECK THE MOVIE OUT! BUT REMEMBER IT CAME WITH A PRICE OF DISRESPECT AND DECEIT FROM THE LAKOTA AND THE WHITE SWEDES! I WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON THIS MESSAGE…NO ONE WILL STOP ME….ITS A VISION FOR TOMORROW…A BETTER TOMORROW OF HOPE…FOR OUR 7TH GENERATION OF HEALERS AND DREAMERS!
